چکیده
Abstract The issue of the relationship between predictive processing (PP) and free energy principle (FEP) remains a subject debate controversy within research community. Many researchers have expressed doubts regarding actual integration PP with FEP, questioning whether FEP can truly contribute significantly to mechanistic understanding or even undermine such altogether. In this paper, I present an alternative perspective. argue that, from viewpoint constraint-based mechanisms approach, imposes important constraint, namely variational energy, on architecture proposed by PP. According high-level cognitive are integral parts extensive heterarchical networks that govern physiology behavior agents. Consequently, explanations phenomena should incorporate constraints flows as relevant components, given implemented operate long is available. Within framework, contend provides constraint for explaining at least some biological described in terms Bayesian generative models minimize prediction errors.

Predictive coding under the free-energy principle.
This paper considers prediction and perceptual categorization as an inference problem that is solved by the brain. We assume that the brain models the world as a hierarchy or cascade of dynamical systems that encode causal structure in the sensorium. Perception is equated with the optimization or inversion of these internal models, to explain sensory data. Given a model of how sensory data are ...
متن کاملReplicated Bethe Free Energy: a Variational Principle behind Survey Propagation
A scheme to provide various mean-field-type approximation algorithms is presented by employing the Bethe free energy formalism to a family of replicated systems in conjunction with analytical continuation with respect to the number of replicas. In the scheme, survey propagation (SP), which is an efficient algorithm developed recently for analyzing the microscopic properties of glassy states for...
متن کاملMinimal self-models and the free energy principle
The term "minimal phenomenal selfhood" (MPS) describes the basic, pre-reflective experience of being a self (Blanke and Metzinger, 2009). Theoretical accounts of the minimal self have long recognized the importance and the ambivalence of the body as both part of the physical world, and the enabling condition for being in this world (Gallagher, 2005a; Grafton, 2009). A recent account of MPS (Met...
متن کاملA free energy principle for the brain.
By formulating Helmholtz's ideas about perception, in terms of modern-day theories, one arrives at a model of perceptual inference and learning that can explain a remarkable range of neurobiological facts: using constructs from statistical physics, the problems of inferring the causes of sensory input and learning the causal structure of their generation can be resolved using exactly the same p...
متن کاملVariational free energy and the Laplace approximation.
This note derives the variational free energy under the Laplace approximation, with a focus on accounting for additional model complexity induced by increasing the number of model parameters. This is relevant when using the free energy as an approximation to the log-evidence in Bayesian model averaging and selection. By setting restricted maximum likelihood (ReML) in the larger context of varia...
